What dinnerware pieces should I buy or own?

Are you a first time dinnerware buyer, a new bride wondering for what dinnerware items you should register, or are you looking to update your home with new dinnerware? Here are some general guidelines for what items you will use. Below, you will find some general definitions of the basic dinnerware pieces.
Basic service (usually what is found in a 16 piece set box)
- 4 dinner plates
- 4 salad plates
- 4 soup/cereal bowls
- 4 mugs
Expanded Basic service
- 4 dinner plates
- 4 salad plates
- 4 soup/cereal bowls
- 4 mugs
- 4 rim soup bowls
- 4 luncheon plates
- 4 cooler glasses
- 8 dinner plates
- 8 salad plates or 8 luncheon plates
- 8 rim soup bowls
- 8 mugs
- 8 dessert plates or 8 salad plates
- 8 water glasses
- 8 wine glasses (if desired)
- 2 vegetable serving bowls (get 2 different sizes or shapes)
- 1 platter (14” or more)
- 1 salt and pepper set
- 1 butter dish with lid (if serving bread, rolls, etc.)
- 1 gravy boat or 1 sauce boat (depending on the meal)
- 1 sugar bowl (usually with a lid) and creamer (if you are serving coffee after dinner and away from the table, you do not need these)
- 8 dinner plates
- 8 luncheon plates
- 8 salad plates
- 8 pasta bowls or 8 rim soup bowls (use for salad or pasta or soup)
- 8 cooler glasses
- 8 mugs (if serving hot beverages)
- 1 sugar and creamer set (if needed for hot beverage)
- 1 salt and pepper set
- 4 – 6 serving bowls of assorted shapes and sizes – for salad, vegetables, soup, rolls, rolled up napkins, flatware
- 3 platters of assorted shapes and sizes – for meat, fish, seafood, bread
- 2 – 4 small bowls for condiments, spices, other little things like corn holders, toothpicks

- 2 vegetable bowls (get 2 different sizes or shapes)
- 1 covered serving bowl or casserole with lid

- 1 butter dish with lid (if serving bread, rolls, etc.)
- 2 gravy boats or 2 sauce boats – put one at either end of the table. Having 2 gravy boats makes passing the gravy easier, and potentially less messy (depending on the meal)
